The above post is a work in progress that I unfortunately haven't updated in a while. If anyone has additional links that could or should be added, particularly those devoted to particular brands, then please post them and they'll be added to the above.

Thanks,
- JP

Here's one you can add for Altec fans if you like. It's the Altec forum.

Speaker building tool sites:

http://www.pvcconsultants.com
-site containing a number of advanced acoustical tools that run with microsoft excel. Great tools, combined, they provide close to the same functionality as some of the professional packages.
http://www.linearteam.dk/
-winisd is one of the better box building programs that is freeware.
http://www.speakerworkshop.com/
-outstanding freeware that allows crossover and box modeling functionality.
http://www.trueaudio.com/
-Great source of info, and TrueRTA, among other excellent pieces of software and some good white papers.
http://www.ht-audio.com/
-source of bassbox pro, a great box simulation tool if you wanted to spend some money.

With speaker workshop, you can take measurements of drivers and speaker systems that are pretty thorough. In order to do it, you need a jig and a mic.
Here is a good budget mic: Behringer ECM8000
http://www.musiciansbuy.com/BEHRINGER_ECM8000_MEAS_MIC.html

This requires a mic preamp, i'd recommend one of the Behringers or any budget mic preamp. No need to pay more than 75.00.

The most popular jig is the Wallin Jig:

Acoustic Line Source Research

Excellent page for anyone interested in DIYing dipole speakers based on ribbons, quasi-ribbons, planar-magnetics, and even cone drivers.
