this TOTL audiophile stereo component is the Japanese market version of the impeccable U.S./WORLD market PIONEER PD-91 CDP from 1988/1989. i am happy to proclaim that i currently have a copy on it's way to me via UPS. the PD-91/PD-3000 design is my all time favorite CDP design bar none, and this japanese PD-3000 is the perfect, superior master-version that the mildly stripped down PD-91 variant is based upon...

now then, i'll let this elegant, poetic shakesperian verse attempt to extoll the technical virtues of the incomparable PD-3000:

10-4, will do!! i've always wondered why PIONEER stripped down the U.S. 91 like they did. the only logical theory i can manage to dream up is that they wanted the direct successor that came two years later, the PD-93, (PD-5000, JPN) to look "that much better" in direct comparison to the 91, as the U.S. 93 actually includes the aluminum top plate and twin transformers that were left out of the 91...

I'm not awere of these cdp design, but i suspect the two transformers are for independent supplying both analog and digital signal path. The Japanese are often very accurate in these "small details" with great sound impact. soundt/action-smiley-035.gif

and there it be!! the PD-3000 playing a CD-R of "MASTERPIECE" by ATLANTIC STARR. or, that's what i'd like to say, but then i'd be partially lying. alas, while the 3000 arrived in excellent physical condition, it was anything but functionally sound. the seller told me it wouldn't read a disc, and needed a new pick-up. i came to find that it needs a bit more than that. the tray wouldn't open. i dismantled it, and found that the magnetic rail assembly had somehow fallen off it's mountings on one side, messing the whole works up. i fixed it, and the whole transport should have worked like normal. alas, someone apparently forced the tray when it was jammed and burnt out the drive motor for the disc stabilizer. it would not slide down to place when i placed a disc. further, the tray would not stay open when fully expelled. i was unable to fix this, so i placed my fully functional transport from the PD-91 in the 3000 chassis. same tray opening problem, but after some pot twiddling, i got it to play a factory CD, and it sounded good. DAMN GOOD, out of the RIGHT CHANNEL. yes you read me right; the RIGHT CHANNEL. the LEFT is DEADER THAN A DOORNAIL. i could not figure out a way to fix it. so instead of crying over spillt milk, i made the best of a hellish situation and put as much of the PD-3000 as i could onto the functional PD-91 chassis. this included the aluminum top plate, the rosewood panels, the four main isolator feet, that are a good deal heavier that the 91's because unlike the 91's they are filled with the same epoxy resin as the transformer. plus, the have copper washers glued on to raise the chassis higher. i also employed the rear transformer isolator, as unlike the black plastic isolator of the 91, this one is crafted of SOLID STEEL, weighing at least a couple pounds! finally, i placed the 3000 face plate, which is like new. the only thing left that i would have liked to use was the rear panel, with it's twin power transformers and thick, PIONEER branded power cable. i lack the skill to do a re-wire, but perhaps someday someone might be able to help me, or i might learn how to myself. at any rate, the hulk is safely tucked away until then. here are some more pics:

a detail i forgot to mention; the 3000 L/R output boards have four OMRON relays (two per channel) and once the disc synchs up, they click on. they also click when you do TRACK SKIP and SEARCH. they click off during PAUSE or STOP. the PD-91 chassis lacks any such design. does anyone know what purpose this serves?

Great job. Congrats. It looks just beautiful. soundt/thumbup.gif

About your relay question:

After the DAC chip you can find components for filtering, (to reduce ultrasonic garbage), buffering (to obtain low enough (typical 100-2k) output impedance) and muting. In almost any "budget cdp" ( sometimes at expensive models... ) muting is performed with bipolar transistors.
More expensive players or better ones use relays for this job, because a transistor has always a small paricitic capacitance. The value is depending of the voltage from collector to emitter, i.e. your audio signal. Manufacturers apply muting to prevent "plopping sounds" while switching on/off. The audio circuit is temporarily short-circuited during on/off switching.
In fact one of the most commun cdp tweak is removing that kind of transistors and replace them with relays, and because of this you can perceive more clarity and detail. Less electronics on the signal path = better sonics. wink.gif
So, that's indeed a good upgrade compared to PD-91.

an update; the motor on the PD-3000 transport is actually NOT burnt out as originally thought. it was merely seized up due to old dry lube. i got it to work. i plan on taking the PD-3000 chassis in to be serviced. the tech should be able to diagnose and service it in it's current condition, now that i've managed to render the transport functional. i'll likely be taking it to AUDIO SPECIALTIES, LTD. in the MALL 205 area of the GRESHAM dist. back at my hometown of PORTLAND, OR. he's the one i got my VSX-D1S from, and i trust his skills. in the mean, i'll be concentrating on purchasing at least one (preferably two or more) of the laser pick-ups that PIONEER currently still has available. i believe obtaining spares is an absolute priority, for reasons that are readily obvious to any vintage CDP enthusiast. at any rate, i hope to some day soon come back to this page with news that i have a FULLY FUNCTIONAL PD-3000, inside and out. until then, the PD-3000/91 hybrid will be serving me very well indeed. things could be worse, after all...

The original transport is essential, make it work is great.
Good luck for the rest. soundt/thumbup.gif
