Sansui CA-2000- the beast takes a bath.

Got a good to very good condition Sansui CA-2000 on my lap. Great pre-amplifiers- quite possibly my favorite pre-1985/1995 unit.

The thing had never been open- ever. Screws were set tight, no signs of a screwdriver ever on them.

Problem? The unit was intermittant.

So I busted it open.

Very, very clean inside- nearly spotless, save for two tiny moth cocoons.

Stripped it apart (one million screws, Austin Power's Doctor Evil says) as I sipped a tasty Bloody Mary, and used a whole can of close-out special-price DeOxit and Pro Gold tiny cans to clean all the switches and pots (no Faderlube on hand).

Soaking the faceplate now in Palm Olive (Marge Says...) and the knobs in lime-scented Windex.

at worse, I'll have no dish-pan hands, and citrus scented potentiometer knobs.

Sorry- no "before" photos, but if the Bloody Marys don't get to my head (doubtful), I'll post pics of the "during" and "after" shenanigans.

On a closing note- this sansui is built real well, shows no signs of bad caps, uses Alps components, and in general, is a really nice piece of gear.

Thed: Looking forward to the pics and listening impression. Any plans on getting the BA-2000?

Is it my imagination or does gear sound better after a good cleaning? I just finished my NAD 7175PE last night and it is crisper with clearer highs. The controls were buried under the tuner board that won't lift out unless the faceplate is off.

Sam,

Yeah, a good cleaning seems to make the connections work better- no intermittancy, no missed connections, no iffy conjunctions.

No plan on getting the Sansui amp.

It'd be nice, but I've got a few quality Denon amps here I'm happy with.

I'll tell you one thing though- sure glad I've gone to separates. soundt/banana.gif

Here's pics....

The innards were almost spotless- I wiped the metal plates with a cloth facecloth and a touch of Windex. Caps and boards were already that clean to begin with.

Faceplate was soaked in soapy warm water (Palm Olive), and an occasional blast of windex, then no wiping, then submerging in that soapy water.

Knobs were soaked in a jar of Windex for 2 hours.

Note- a few inner frame pieces are removed in these photos.

I'll take pics on re-assembly and post 'em tonight, tomrrow, or the next day- we'll see when I get a chance to get it done. Hopefully sooner than later.

Hahahahahaha!

Thanks, pal, wish you were closer to hear it.

Other thasn one other pre-amp Mr. Pig has turned me onto (he's a good, but baaaad influence), I must say the Sansui and the Philips are true gems.

I'm feeling real lucky.

Yeah... I'm a Libra. Something to do with the "balance" thing.

Either that, or I'm just obsessive. laugh.gif

Nice job Paul, and it looks great. I get a lot of satisfaction from giving a piece of gear a thorough cleaning.
