Are they worth paying $120.00 in shipping costs?

Local pickup makes 'em affordable, and other than the dinged tweeter they look very nice. You gonna do the refoam?

5002's are really nice speakers. Much better than the originals IMHO. I won't tell you what I paid for mine, I might cry. Still I like them.

By the time Scott is done refurbishing them he'll probably have close to $50 in 'em. laugh.gif He should be getting back from picking up the 5002's pretty soon.

not quite that, with gas (105 mile round trip) and surrounds courtesy of Reedger, i'll be right at $40.

got em back home, i'm going to try and suck out that dimple on the one tweeter. other than that and the foam (poor guy obviously had a toddler go at them), they are in really nice condition.

Scott, you know i had some of those right? Real good speaker. I found that dome tweeter more to my liking than the original walnut Advents of which i still have a pair.

Scott,

I have some 5012s.

From my experiences with them, two things to look out for-

1) The tweeter wires sometimes get a bit futzed and sometimes come off- a friend got a pair with a bad tweeter that was no more than either corrosion and the wire coming off, or just the wire coming off.

2) From both myself and other folks with far nicer ears, there are some of these that sound real muffled in the highs. Not anything to do with the tweeter- it's the caps, we believe, going lazy.

I absolutely need to recap mine. The potential is there for them, but they sound flat and distant at this time.

congrats on a great score.

Funny story- I had almost got the exact pair that Kelly got- for $50- I had contacted the seller and made an agreement with him, but this was unkbeknownst to Kelly. The guy backed out when Kelly made a trade with him- the guy never mentioned that he had a deal in the works! Small world, eh?

I got the 5012s after I told my friend what was most likely wrong with them (tweeter disconnected), and after he felt they were a bit lazy (I'm sure it's caps).

Kelly is the deal monger. IIrc, he later got a pair of Magnepan SMG-As for them, so it was a definite trade up.

Remember, if they sound a bit flat or a bit lifeless, re-cap them. I'll need to recap mine myself, because of this.

They'll sound smoother than the original fried egg tweeter Advents. Many people prefer them over the originals, but there are die-hards that like the earlier models.

To each his own, and glad of it.
